What is Linux Commands?
A command is an instruction given by a user telling a computer to do something, such a run a single program or a group of linked programs. Commands are generally issued by typing them in at the command line (i.e., the all-text display mode) and then pressing the ENTER key, which passes them to the shell.
How to Run Linux Commands on Windows 1
To run Linux commands on windows we have to install cygwin software and without any additional Linux system required, please flow the instruaction
1: Go to the link and Install Cygwin setup .exe file : Click Here
You have to download appropriate version based on your operating system like mine is 64 bits and i have downloaded 64 bits.
To check your operating system Go to Start->Right Click on Computer->Select Properties.
2: Once you downloaded , double click on .exe file for installation process.
3: Click on Next button to proceed installation.
4: Select as Install from Internet and click on Next
5: Select default name Root Directory and click on Next.
6: Click on Next.
7: Click on Next again.
8: Select any download mirror and click on Next.
Click on Next till you get this screen
9: It takes some time to download and install so be patient. After successfully installation, go to your desktop and double click on icon or go to Start and type Cygwin64 Terminal icon.
10: Once you double click you will see the Cygwin window looks similar as Windows command prompt
On this window also you can write UNIX commands and execute. But using this window you can’t update or access any file. So might be it’s not much useful here.
To perform other additional operation and to work on normal Windows command prompt we need to set Cygwin path.
How to set the Cygwin path to work on normal Windows command prompt.
Please follow the process.
1: Go to Start and Right
Click on Computer and Select properties.
2: Click on Advanced system settings shown on left side.
3: Click on Advanced tab and then Environment Variables button
4: Under system variables select Path and then click on Edit button.
5: In variable value at the end add ;C:\cygwin64\bin\
6: Click OK and close all the windows opened.
Open your windows command prompt and type any LINUX command. I have typed here “echo” and got the result ECHO is on. Wow it works!
Now you have successfully installed Cygwin and you are able to run Linux commands on windows machine
